Wrapping Up Our 2016 Summer Programs

Summer 2016 is in the history books and we had an amazing time!

We ran a total of 11 summer programs, servicing 96 students from all over the world, including Argentina, Puerto Rico, Uganda, India, Thailand, Canada, México, Venezuela, China, and 30 different US states. 15 of these students had such an amazing experience last summer they came back this summer to further develop their independent living and career skills. We also hired 55 staff members to support and guide the students.

New for CIP this summer was Mploy, a job readiness program for students who have graduated high school up to the age of 26. During this two-week experience students developed core skills and abilities needed for success in the workplace and independent living. Brevard was our first Mploy program to kick off the summer sessions. I wanted to share with you their Kennedy Space Center experience:

CIP Brevard’s Summer Mploy students, along with some of CIP Brevard’s full year students, had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at Kennedy Space Center to do a career presentation and tour with Jacobs, one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of technical professional and construction services. Students were able to see not only the inside, but the roof of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) where they put together space crafts.

Students were also given an up-close tour of the crawlers, a working launchpad, and their mission preparation space, including a 3D printer. You can read more about our adventure at Kennedy Space Center here.

Just like every summer, Summer@CIP was a HUGE success. This program is designed for students who are entering their sophomore year of high school up through recent high school graduates. Like Mploy, they spend 2 weeks on a college campus, but focus more on experiencing independent living, engaging in fun recreational activities, making friends, developing social and executive functioning skills, and much, much more.

“The Summer program at CIP was ideal for my teen – it was a perfect first “away” experience and an excellent balance of independence with appropriate supports. The staff was great and truly worked with his individual needs!” – Summer@CIP Parent

Summer@CIP Berkshire students were also able to experience a unique relationship development workshop session with Carol Bass from Social Dynamix:

Social Dynamix is a totally unique, interactive style of learning. It combines expressive therapy, Psychodrama, and social pragmatics with theater to help individuals overcome anxiety in social settings. Carol was able to demonstrate how to engage in social playfulness that contributes to one’s ability to form meaningful relationships. This was a GREAT workshop and the students had such a fun time. Thank you Carol for collaborating with us!

If you were unable to join us this summer we hope to see you next summer. We have already started receiving applications for summer 2017! If you have any questions about our programs or want to see how your student can benefit from our programs, don’t hesitate to contact me!
