Why is Volunteering Important?

A walk on a rainy October Saturday morning may sound to most like a chilly adventure. But nothing was more heartwarming than to see a group of near strangers come together for the ‘Out of the Darkness Walk’ in support of one of their classmates.  The students of Mansfield Hall had known their new classmate for only 2 months, yet all came out in overwhelming support of his struggle around losing a friend to suicide. Seeing this made in me a concrete belief in how incredible volunteering your time can be.

We believe here at Mansfield Hall that volunteerism is an integral part of a well-rounded, socially conscious and responsible individual.  Volunteering offers individuals a chance to give back to their community while feeling a strong sense of self efficacy and gaining valuable perspectives.  Some organizations our students proudly volunteer at are the King Street Youth Center, Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, Special Olympics Vermont and Echo Lake Aquarium.

Burlington offers choices for volunteering

Students at Mansfield Hall are able to choose from hundreds of volunteer opportunities.  Because of the socially conscious city we live in and the wealth of choices for these opportunities, students can really cater to not only their interests and strengths but are offered vibrant opportunities for growth and challenge.  Participating in volunteer work offers our students an invaluable opportunity to gain new and challenging perspectives, vocational skills and a chance to meet new people.
