Mploy Students Tour the Kennedy Space Center

CIP Brevard’s Summer Mploy students, along with some of CIP Brevard’s full year students, had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at Kennedy Space Center to do a career presentation and tour with Jacobs, one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of technical professional and construction services. Students were able to see not only the inside, but the roof of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) where they put together space crafts.

Students were also given an up-close tour of the crawlers, which are the mode of transportation used to move the completed space crafts to the launch pad. Students were able to walk on and through the crawler on a guided tour. KSC has 2 crawlers that they utilize to transport space crafts.

From the crawlers, students continued on to see a working launchpad up close and personal! Students had the opportunity to stand on the launchpad and look around while Jacobs personnel provided information and answered questions.

The last stop on the tour was inside the building where mission preparation occurs and experiments are conducted. Students were able to witness packaging foam being cut by a machine and being prepared to store items to go onto a space shuttle! This is a very intricate process that requires the machines to cut the foam in precisely the dimensions of whatever object is going into them. The gentleman running this lab also utilized a 3D printer and provided students 3D printed space shuttles as a souvenir! Last but not least, students were able to see a space shuttle that has traveled into space.

Having the opportunity to receive a behind-the-scenes guided tour of Kennedy Space Center, as well as career presentation, from Jacobs was a wonderful and informative experience for all!
