On Saturday, April 12th, CIP Long Beach students attended a Chalk Art Festival in the city of Covina in honor of Autism Awareness month. The festival was presented by the Autism Movement Therapy, the City of Covina, and the Covina Cultural Arts Advisory Commission. Career Coordinator Caroline Fortuno planned the event as a volunteer opportunity for the students, and students in attendance earned Community Service hours for their participation.

The event featured music, vendors, and art displays. The many artists in attendance transformed the cement in Heritage Plaza into a bright and colorful street museum. CIP students volunteered at the art booth, where they helped grate chalk and mix it with water so the artists could use it to create their masterpieces. Students also helped distribute raffle tickets throughout the event.

The event was attended by students Tim, Jason, Matthew, Tess, Grant, Alex, John, Merritt, and Michael. Career Coordinator Caroline Fortuno attended the event along with Program Director Nickey Woods , Wellness Coordinator Alice Williams, and Life Skills staff members Matt Smith and Jessica Ivey. CIP Long Beach was happy to be in attendance and we’re proud of our students’ commitment to community service.
