Chapel Haven Celebrates World Down Syndrome Awareness Day with Stories of Success

Down Syndrome Nick and Sam

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 marks World Down Syndrome Awareness Day and Chapel Haven is celebrating the day by featuring a social media campaign of our adults talking about their lives and by wearing “lots of socks” to get people talking.

Thank you to the following Chapel Haven adults who participated and are featured in video interviews on Chapel Haven’s Facebook page:
Allison Haines
Carolyn Henderson
Dylan Kuhnhenn
Sam Powell
Nick Romeo

People with Down syndrome, their families, friends, teachers, coworkers and supporters celebrate the date across the globe. Celebrated on the 21st day of the third month of the year, the date is symbolic of the third copy of the 21st chromosome that characterizes Down syndrome.

“Chapel Haven has been teaching adults with Down Syndrome how to live happy, productive and independent lives since our founding in 1972,” said Chapel Haven President Michael Storz. “Our adults have their own apartments, work in satisfying jobs and have friends – all the hallmarks of a happy adult life! We look forward to recognizing our adults for all their amazing achievements”

Here is a sampling of videos running on Chapel Haven’s Facebook page. Dylan Kuhnhenn talks about his job, his friends and his plans to pursue a culinary certificate at Gateway Community College.

There are over 400,000 Americans living with Down syndrome. It is the most common chromosomal condition. Join Chapel Haven and the NDSS on March 21 in celebrating the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
