Camping Tradition @ CIP Brevard

An active social life is an important component of CIP’s Life Skills program. Unique recreational activities and other social events are planned each weekend, and lasting friendships are developed. As a group, students learn to be open minded, make compromises and value the interests of fellow students. CIP’s active social schedule helps foster life-long connections and develop more self-confidence.

To help develop students’ social skills, staff and students camped at the St. Sebastian River Preserve for an evening, and spent the night under the stars. Upon arrival the students set up their tents, and set out to explore the area. The camp site was excellent, complete with a fire pit and benches, picnic tables, shade trees, a metal lean-to, and even an old well! Megan, Stephanie, and Savannah took a short hike out to the levy to look at the C-54 Canal, while Jack and the other students hung out at camp, playing guitar, tossing a football, and enjoying conversation. As it grew dark, a fire was built and the students roasted hot dogs and marshmallows over the open flame. The students and staff played a few rounds of “Man Hunt” in the general vicinity of camp, and sang songs around the campfire. The weather was warm but it was a beautiful night. In the morning, the fire was lit again for biscuits made in a dutch oven and the students sat around the fire once more. After eating, the students packed up the tents and their campsite to go home. Fun was had by all, and the students can’t wait to go again.
