2016 Autism Awareness Month at CIP Berkshire

Berkshire Autism Awareness Month

At CIP Berkshire, students and staff did a variety of activities to celebrate Autism Awareness Month. We kicked off the festivities on April 2 by participating in the Light It Up Blue ceremony at Park Square in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to mark World Autism Awareness Day. Staff and students donned blue and braved the rain in honor of our community and held small blue flags proudly in the air as the blue lights were lit in and around Park Square. While at the Light It Up Blue event, students also took part in the monthly Artswalk event, where they enjoyed over a dozen different art shows featuring the work of over 20 accomplished regional artists in Pittsfield’s bustling Upstreet Cultural District.

Clad in their blue Team CIP t-shirts yet again, students and staff also decorated the halls of the Berkshire Center with blue lights and draped blue paper around the lights so the halls were basked in a blueish glow to mark the day. It is always fun for staff and students to work together.

In addition to the activities on World Autism Awareness Day, on April 7th CIP students volunteered to help clean the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Red Lion Inn is a very significant institution with a rich history, serving travelers to the area for over 200 years. Students assisted the staff there by participating in their annual spring cleaning, making the place look and smell wonderful for guests and the community at large.

The students’ community service didn’t stop there. On April 14 the students also helped clean up their home town of Lee, Massachusetts, donning gloves and grabbing trash bags, rakes, and brooms to help make the area surrounding the school look great. The students worked hard and had a good time together. Autism Awareness Month is a great opportunity to not only focus the spotlight on autism but to really come together as a community.
